AVP Ends 2023 Season with a Twist: No Championship in Sight
The closure of the AVP’s 2023 season took an unexpected turn with the absence of the much-anticipated AVP Gold Series Championship, marking the end of an era for beach volleyball enthusiasts. In a statement, the AVP expressed regret over their inability to secure a suitable venue and timeframe for the championship, leaving the Laguna Beach Open as the final event on October 13-15.
Last year’s championship, held at the Footprint Center, had featured six teams per gender, but uncertainties loomed over this year’s edition, including venue, qualification criteria, prize money, and format. As the AVP removed the championship from its schedule, it became evident that the event’s cancellation was imminent.
The unexpected turn of events leaves the AVP season concluding with the Laguna Tour Series, coinciding with the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Tlaxcala, Mexico. Despite the absence of a championship, nine USA teams are scheduled to participate in Mexico, with another team on the reserve list, highlighting the nation’s strong presence in the international beach volleyball scene.
The cancellation brings an abrupt end to the AVP’s 40th-anniversary celebrations, leaving fans and athletes alike with a sense of uncertainty about the future of domestic beach volleyball. However, internationally, the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Paris Elite16 is set to kick off in September, followed by a series of fall events leading up to December’s World Tour Finals in Doha, Qatar.
As the AVP season concludes, athletes reflect on their performances, with winners like Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth clinching back-to-back victories in Atlanta and Chicago. While the absence of a championship may dampen spirits momentarily, athletes remain focused on their international endeavors as they strive for excellence on the global stage.
